Tax Management NZ (TMNZ) is inviting clients in Christchurch to attend on 17 November an informative update on the economy as well as Inland Revenue’s compliance focus and business transformation.
Westpac Senior Economist Michael Gordon and Inland Revenue Investigations Manager Gary Welsh will share their insights on these respective topics. TMNZ Chief Executive Chris Cunniffe will also provide a brief practical session on tax pooling.

Michael has been part of Westpac’s economics and strategy team since 2006.
He is responsible for coordinating the team’s views on financial markets, inflation, growth and international trade. He also contributes to a range of internal and external research.
Michael previously worked at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as a Senior Analyst in the Financial Stability department.
He studied at the University of Waikato and graduated with a Masters in Management Studies.
Gary Welsh is an Investigations Manager with Inland Revenue in Christchurch.
In this role, he leads investigations teams in Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. These teams cover a wide variety of tax issues including property, fraud and evasion, aggressive tax planning and other tax technical work sometimes resulting as binding rulings.
Throughout his career with Inland Revenue, he has undertaken a variety of work with corporate taxpayers, including involvement with the implementation of new legislation and organisational restructuring. Prior to joining Inland Revenue, he spent time working in various accounting management areas.
Chris is the CEO of TMNZ.
He joined the company after leading the tax teams at Air New Zealand and BNZ for 15 years.
Chris is a member of the Tax Advisory Group for Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), a group which develops and presents CAANZ’s position on tax policy and tax administration matters.

3.15pm-4pm: Inland Revenue’s compliance focus and business transformation
This session will cover current priority work and compliance approaches being taken by Inland Revenue. In particular, there will be a focus on work in the areas of property and the ‘hidden economy’. The session will also include an overview of what further compliance activity may look like as part of Inland Revenue’s business transformation.

This session will cover the current state of the New Zealand economy with a particular focus on issues relating to the Canterbury region.

4.45pm-5.15pm: Insights and developments in the use of tax pooling by businesses and accountants
This session will provide practical tips on managing your clients’ cashflow around provisional tax dates, and strategies to mitigate their exposure to Inland Revenue interest and late payment penalties where there is an uncertain historical tax position.
